The Wanderers is many things…an urban gang drama, juvenile comedy, changing of the times study and more. It works on all these levels and has become a certified cult classic. At it’s core, the Wanderers is about the final death of the innocence of the 1950’s. The Wanderers are an Italian gang in NY, still clinging to the last vestiges of the 1950’s with their matching satin jackets and grease-backed hair. Early on several members run afoul of another gang, the notorious ‘Baldies’. The Wanderers find themselves trapped until a newcomer, the huge Perry saves them and is immediately welcomed into the gang by their leader Richie (Ken Wahl).

The various members of the Wanderers have problems to deal with on their own. Richie has gotten his girlfriend, Despie, pregnant, Perry’s mother is an Alcoholic, Turkey wants to join the Baldies and Joey has an abusive father who thinks his son doesn’t measure up. The Wanderers have a verbal war with a black gang, the Del Bombers, in school and decide to settle things with an old-fashioned rumble.

When the Wanderers cannot get any other gangs to back them up, Despies father (Dolph Sweet) a neighborhood mob boss steps in and decides to stop the rumble and have the gangs settle their differences with a football game instead…with a lot of mob money riding on the outcome. The game climaxes when the two gangs, along with the rest in attendance, must join together to fight “The Ducky Boys”, a group of vicious, seemingly homosexuals, who have crashed the game with hundreds of members.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Wanderers! Click Here

Mixed in with the drama and action is a liberal amount of juvenile buddy comedy as the Wanderers ‘accidently’ bumb into women on the street in order to touch their breasts. This is how the meet Nina (karen Allen) a bohemian girl who Richie becomes infatuated with. There there are drunken parties, games of strip poker, etc. In one memorable scene, the drunken Baldies join the marines.

Through all of this is the theme of the changing of the times. The doo-wop of the 1950’s is now being replaced by folk music. A poignant scene has Richie following Nina until she enters a club where (in sound anyway) Bob Dylan is playing. Richie doesn’t enter as he seems to know that it’s just not his world. The film also covers the assasination of John Kennedy as the symbolic death of innocence. It is this moment the galvanizes the strained relationship between Despie and Richie.

One wishes that the Ducky Boys had been better explained. They are a creepy group of men..older than the other gangs…who never speak and were actually seen taking Holy Communion in one part where Turkey enters their turf by mistake and his killed. What were the Ducky Boys representing? It’s the one mystery of the film.

The Wanderers has a fantastic soundtrack of early 1960’s hits including “Soldier Boy”, “Walk Like a Man”, “Runaround Sue”, “Shout”, “Big Girls don’t Cry” and of course the title track.

This is a movie that holds up still after 25 years because it works well on so many different levels. This was mostly a cast of unknowns with Karen Allen perhaps being the most notable star a year after she did ‘Animal House’. An enjoyable movie from beginning to end.

“The Wanderers” is a class act and a stylish movie that has a brassy toughness to it that is both infectious and moving. It was probably overshadowed on it’s release by the other gang movie of 1979 “The Warriors”, but “The Wanderers” easily holds an equal footing as an excellent period piece of working class lives in 1963. The film centres around the lives of a gang of young boys in the Bronx in mid 1963 coming to terms with friendships, school, girls and other gangs. Ken Wahl ( a promising actor who for some reason never quite made it to the big time !! ) plays a great lead as the smooth talking and charismatic, Richie, the leader of the Wanderers. Richie is struggling to maintain his gangs strength and position in the local neighbourhood as well as juggling his many relationships with different girlfriends. He meets a young and attractive Karen Allen whilst out on the streets with his buddies, and from there another relationship develops. Allen plays her role with style, and even though Allen is not a great beauty, she has that unmistakable feminine charm, especially when that wonderful smile lights up her face.

What makes the movie all the more interesting is the way it goes behind the scenes into the home lives and the hopes, fears and dreams of some of the gang members. We see Joey’s artistic talents put down by his fearsome, aggressive father…we see Turkey struggle with his own identity within the different gangs…and we see Richie forced to take responsibility for his actions near the film’s conclusion. Backing the movie up, is a dynamite soundtrack containing some top numbers including “Stand by Me”, “Runaraound Sue”, “Soldier Boy” & of course “The Wanderer” !!

A movie that has charm & talent, and stands up to repeated viewings with ease…if you haven’t seen it already….catch up with “The Wanderers” soon !!

Which is more important, the journey or the destination? Romao is an illiterate and unemployed man with a wife and five kids, but he believes in destiny. “My true destiny is on the road,” he tells anyone who would stop him from taking his family of seven on a six-month, two thousand mile bicycle journey across the heart of Brazil to Rio de Janeiro. There, he believes, he will find work so that he can feed his family. People think he’s crazy, of course, including his family. They panhandle, do odd jobs, sing songs at restaurants, meet people both evil and good, and sleep in abandoned buildings and rusted out buses. But they love each other deeply and experience many life lessons, especially the adolescent Antonio who is turning into a young man. This film, “based upon a true story,” won at least five festival awards, all of them deserved in my opinion. In Portuguese with English subtitles.

If you are curious about Brasil as i am, you must listen to this movie. Road trip on bicycle from Paraiba state on nordeste Brasil until Rio de Janeiro. A family looking for a better life. Great views of the Brasil countryside, and costal areas. A simple but beautiful movie, no action but the same Brasil quality.

One of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s finest films is “The Double Life of Veronique” (”La Double vie de Véronique”). It’s not just a philosophical, arty film, but a subtle and unique tale full of Kieslowski’s directorial magic, and gives Irène Jacob a chance to shine in her most challenging role.

There are two women, the Polish Weronika and the French Veronique (both played by Irène Jacob). They have never met, never spoken, and do not know that the other exists. They share the same losses and the same health. Weronika is a singer, and Veronique is taking singing lessons. But their lives and souls are bound together, and their personalities are yin-yang opposites, one practical and one a stargazer.

What is more, each has the strange feeling that she is, somehow, not alone in the world. One night, Weronika dies onstage while singing. Suddenly in France, Veronique is stricken with a strange feeling, and stops taking her lessons. Weronika has died, but she still lives. Soon she begins to explore, searching for the truth about her double life, and a strange puppeteer who somehow is a link between both girls.

“Double Life of Veronique” is one of those rare films that just begs to be analyzed. Is it about being puppets in some enormous scheme of things? About fate? Sacrifice? Love? One woman’s soul in two bodies? Political symbolism? Or is it simply about some mysterious dimension of the spiritual? The symbols and metaphors can be unwound any which way, and in the end they all work. Even the ending is ambiguous — is it happy, or sad?

Krzysztof Kieslowski’s direction is impeccable. His use of light and shadow, and the atmospheric music, make “Double Life” practically a work of art. He dots “Double Life” with plenty of little hints about the inner states of the characters. The stars and leaves, for example, hint at the personalities of Weronika and Veronique — one a dreamer, one down-to-earth. Kieslowski also used a minimalist approach to dialogue, often using pauses and silence that speak louder than the ordinary words.

At times this film seems like a love letter on film to Irène Jacob. Not only is she followed constantly by the camera, but her character is difficult but rewarding. Jacob shines without really seeming to, with the emotion and wonder of a small child in an adult body. Philippe Volter’s aura of mystery adds to his excellent acting in his too-brief scenes. Unfortunately, few of the other characters are given much dimension — the whole focus is on Weronika and Veronique.

This bewitching tale of love, loss, and interconnected souls winds a spell around this film. Interpret it as you will. Kieslowski’s “Double Life of Veronique” is exquisite.

The Double Life of Veronique is an absolutely stunning film. The director, whose work includes Decalogue and the superb Three Colors Trilogy (Blue, White, and Red), displays a confident tone in his deliberate pacing and the subtle way in which he establishes the mood of this picture. In Irene Jacob (also the star of Red), he finds the perfect leading lady, who has an innocent yet mysterious and beautiful aura which works so well with the tone of this film.

There isn’t really a plotline in this movie, but in general, it concerns the lives of two women (Veronique and Veronikka, both played by Irene Jacob) born on the same day but in different countries. Though they lead separate lives, there are parallels drawn in their existence, and their paths cross ever so briefly as the story of one woman dissolves into the story of the second. There is a distinct dreamlike quality to this film, and certainly, mood rather than narrative is the dominant driving force to the film.

Most Americans will consider this film to be a typical European “art house” film. If that is not your cup of tea, then you probably will not like this film, for it is decidedly a non-Hollywood production. Don’t even bother trying to compare this film with the recent and remarkably inferior Demi Moore Hollywood film about two similar women living on separate continents; the films are nothing alike. “La double vie de veronique” is an excellent film for those who admire director Kieslowski’s films or who have the patience to try something different and enlightening.

Hey there! I’m gonna go ahead and say that THIS IS NOT FOR FREAKIN’ KIDS! Everyone has said it, but people are giving it a bad rating just because there kids saw it or it’s not for kids. For God sakes, it says that on the box! Now, If you love cute and cuddley animals with happy endings, get the hell off this page! For those people with a sick and twisted sense of violant humor (like me), you’ll love it. In this you have little cute animals getting ripped in half, getting thier intestines spewed everywhere, and all that good stuff. If your like me, it’s something to die for! Hah! Pun!

There are a few reasons why you wouldn’t like happy tree friends, 1.your’e squimish, 2.you don’t like violence, or 3.you have never seen it. If you don’t fall in any of these catogories there is no reason for you not to love it. What’s funnier than watching a bear in a green beret uniform put a live grenade into a rabbits hand after being impaled several times.

This was a highly enjoyable movie. Now, mind you, it has little to do with the book series outside of the same characters - it was (very, extremely) loosely adapted from the latter part of the “Night Watch” novel, so don’t expect it to at all relate to “Day Watch” the book. Like the first movie, there was a lot of great action and watching Anton get his butt kicked all over the place - which hey, that’s why we love him, right? Not to mention the whole scene at Yegor’s party. But you’ll have to watch it to see that - it’s just a good thing the old witch wasn’t holding a grudge after her 12 years in the zoo as a toad (definitely HAVE to WATCH IT *grin*).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Day Watch! Click Here

We watched it in Russian with the subtitles. They weren’t as much a part of the movie as the original - but they still occasionally were created so be a part of the scenery.

(EDIT): After watching the added features, I am even more impressed with this movie. The birthday party scene was filmed in a most unique manner. The director simply rounded up a bunch of people (if I recall correctly, it was a business conference) and gave them free food and drink. After a couple of hours, when everyone was nice and buzzed, they started filtering in the actors and filming. This sort of off-the-cuff manner of filming was an enormous risk but it paid off brilliantly - most of the people in that scene, in the background, are really just people at a party, doing what people at a party do. I was VERY impressed! (/EDIT)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Day Watch! Click Here

Fans of good sci-fi/action/thrillers will enjoy this, as will people who enjoyed the first movie. If you haven’t yet read the books, do watch the movies FIRST; which is pretty much good advice for any movie adapted from a book. But still a high rating from me for this movie!

I loved Night Watch and I think this film is a great wrap up to everyone’s story arc. I saw both in the theater and bought the DVDs as soon as they came out. However, for me, the animated subtitles are about 1/4 of the fun. It makes it feel like a comic book and just gives it that edge. So why oh why did Fox not release that version for the DVD? I find it baffling that someone made the decision to not include them even as an option. Fox DVDs have been a mixed bag as of late and I think I will stop buying them sight unseen and rather rent them first to see if the DVD is good. It is unfortunate that Fox is so inconsistent in the quality of their releases.

This is the way to do it. All 20 episodes give you all the Space Ghost and all the Dino Boy stories from the original show in the one package. If you enjoyed Gary Owens’ voice of Blue Falcon, in last year’s Scooby Doo/Dynomutt Hour release on DVD, you’ll think he’s just right as the voice of Space Ghost too.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Space Ghost and Dino Boy: The Complete Series! Click Here

This was Hanna-Barbera’s first serious super hero show. Space Ghost, Jan and Jace, and monkey pet Blip respond to calls for help from their Ghost Planet, and tackle galactic threats like Metallus, Brak, Lurker, Brago and Creature King.

The last six stories form a serial adventure, in which you’ll see guest appearances by Shazzan, Moby Dick, Mightor and Herculoids, which is an obvious cue for subsequent releases of those characters’ shows too.

Here’s hoping they put out the later series “Space Stars” (made in 1981, with Space Ghost, Herculoids, Teen Force, Astro and Space Star finales).

Wowee! The original adventures of the occasionally invisible cosmic superhero known as Space Ghost are finally available on DVD. Unfortunately, it appears that Warner may have left the package/disc design and episode distribution up to the treacherous members of the Council of Doom. Both of the identical-looking DVDs in this set are double-sided fingerprint collectors. To make matters worse, they overlap one another on a cheesy digipack holder in a skinny cardboard case. Side A of the first disc holds only four episodes (each episode consisting of three six-minute cartoons), while a whopping eight episodes are crammed onto Side B. (That probably explains why my first copy had a defective B-side.) Disc 2 has eight more episodes loaded onto Side A, and a fascinating 78-minute documentary on the life of temperamental comic book artist and Space Ghost creator, Alex Toth, on the flipside. Clearly, this should have been a three or four disc set. But, on a more positive note, the artwork on the cardboard is stellar–with a groovy image of an inviso-powered Space Ghost behind the DVDs, and paintings of Dino Boy, Bronty and Ugh on the outside of the flimsy folder. And, of course, the cartoons burned onto these inferior flipper discs are classics–incredibly imaginative and filled with cleverly designed heroes and villains.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Space Ghost and Dino Boy: The Complete Series! Click Here

Included along with the 42 exciting Space Ghost shorts in this collection are 18 stone-aged escapades starring the underappreciated and oddly-named Dino Boy. According to Wikipedia, Dino Boy’s real name is Todd, but his blue-eyed caveman pal, Ugh, knows him only as “Dino Boy.” This is likely due to the fact that he is usually seen perched atop his pet dinosaur, Bronty/Bronto. If he were on horseback, he would be called `Horse Boy.’ If he rode a camel, he would be `Camel Boy,’ and so on. The introduction that begins each story states that D.B. landed in the prehistoric Lost Valley after he was “forced to parachute from a disabled plane.” The events leading up to that fateful jump remain a mystery. Were the lad’s parents on that airplane? Were they killed in the eventual crash that would presumably have resulted from the reported disability? Was there only one parachute available? Or, did the other passengers simply grow weary of the redheaded youngster’s incessant talking and throw him from the plane in a fit of fury and frustration?

Hopping hop toads! Dino Boy does have an annoying habit of talking to himself continuously, acting as his own narrator by describing his every action and observation…even in the presence of enemies. The sometimes freckle-faced child (curiously, his freckles come and go, as if they have their own inviso-power) does not appear to miss his family or suffer from any degree of homesickness. No, the leopard-booted juvenile is just having a blast exploring this weird prehistoric world from the back of his swift-footed brontosaurus–who looks like a green version of Dino, of Flintstones fame, and sounds a lot like Scooby Doo–and hanging out with his club-swinging Neanderthal protector, Ugh. Ugh talk funny. Not know much words. Dino Boy try teach Ugh to read and talk good, but Ugh not that smart. Him not sell auto insurance any time soon. Together, Dino Boy and Ugh battle everything from purple-skinned Worm People to bat-winged Vampire Men. And, when they’re not being sacrificed to the Sun King by beak-headed vulture priests, life in the jungle is good.

Dino Boy is okay, but the main attraction here is the legendary square-jawed phantom phenom, Space Ghost (voiced by Laugh-In’s Gary Owens). This white-clad space ranger’s super powers are derived from the red and yellow power bands he wears on his wrists. With these mighty accessories, the eyeless defender of the galaxy possesses superhuman strength and speed, as well as an arsenal of weapons, ranging from freeze rays and heat rays to energy bolts and force rays. Without these formidable wristlets, Space Ghost is just a regular guy in a leotard. Mr. Ghost also wears a rocket pack that enables him to soar through the cosmos, and, of course, an inviso-belt that enables him to become invisible…that is, aside from those obvious white outlines that villain’s apparently cannot see.

Space Ghost is assisted by a pair of teenaged siblings by the names of Jan and Jace. These wondrous twins dress a bit like the first X-Men and wear Lone Ranger-type masks over their eyes–which, unlike Space Ghost’s, are occasionally visible. Jan and Jace don’t own any power bands, but they are equipped with inviso-belts and jet packs, which they use quite frequently. The junior galactic protectors patrol the starry abyss in their sporty Space Coupe, accompanied at all times by their flat-headed primate pal, Blip. When there’s trouble, they just touch their blinking insignia communicators to radio Space Ghost, who is usually either monitoring the Danger Alert Channel at his headquarters on Ghost Planet, or zooming around in his sleek orange Phantom Cruiser.

Surprisingly, Blip is the true hero of this far-out group, often saving the day by skillfully utilizing his inviso-power to retrieve Space Ghost’s all-important power bands–which are typically confiscated by the myriad evildoers that regularly threaten the universe. Diminutive fiends like the cat-eyed Creature King and the fish-faced Lurker never fail to underestimate the uncanny cleverness of this masked monkey marvel. On countless occasions, Space Ghost is obliged to offer a grateful “Good boy, Blip!” as foe after foe falls victim to his or her own diabolical traps. As Jace so eloquently puts it, “Sometimes, he who laughs last gets caught.”

Animation collectors will not want to be without this Hanna-Barbera gem, but be sure to check those discs carefully for scratches and defects. Flipper discs bad. Ugh no like bad flipper discs! Run, Dino Boy, RUN!

Hi there! I just finished watching the third season of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and was very pleased. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air made its debut in the early 90’s and it’s easy to see how times have changed since then, yet many of the issues and jokes in the show are still funny and fresh(how convenient). Without ruining the season for you, the highlights of this season include Philip Banks’s run for political office, Hilary’s finding of a job(for longer than a day!), and Vivian’s pregnancy. The season is full of funny moments; no less than the previous seasons, and there are also many familiar faces that show up as guests, including “Mr. Jefferson”, Oprah Winfrey, and D. L. Hughley. The most amazing thing about these season DVDs are that they have a great price (I bought mine at Best Buy for $21 plus tax, and the price on Amazon is around that too); not like DVD sets like Friends or CSI (still great shows though!). If you were pleased with the first two seasons this will not disappoint, and for those who have never watched the Fresh Prince it’s such a good show that it’s not hard to catch on even if you don’t watch the seasons in numerical order.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - The Complete Third Season! Click Here

The only thing I am not impressed with is this season’s (or last season’s) special features. The special features include a “documentary” kind of thing with some tidbits on the actors/guests as highlights from all three seasons are shown, and a blooper reel. Some of the bloopers on the reel are really funny, yet the only problem with it is that it shows the SAME bloopers that are shown during the credits of many of the episodes. Chances are that you will watch the special features after watching most of the episodes, and have already seen the bloopers. I suppose it makes for a nice way to get a laugh at the bloopers in one sitting (most of the individual bloopers last for less than half a minute and most of the episodes had an individual blooper during the credits), but it would be nice if you could see some bloopers that were never previously shown instead of getting a second laugh at the same bloopers.

Overall, great season but less than mediocre special features.

Here’s to 4 more seasons of this great show!

An avid fan of Home Improvement, I had been impatiently anticipating the moment when the fourth season of my favorite sitcom, Home Improvement, would be released.

Call me a weirdo, but I found myself waiting at the Home Entertainment section at Wal-Mart before midnight to get this DVD, and they were stocking it a half hour before, and I grabbed it and attempted to pay for it, but the lady at the register took it and put it up and said I had to wait a half hour. So I waited, impatiently.

I finally got home with it and before I watched it, I looked at the packaging. This time, Tim, Jill, and the kids are featured on the cover, and it looks as though Tim had a mishap and accidentally sawed off part of the DVD cover, because the lower right corner is missing! The inner art is basically the same as the other seasons, with one panel listing the episodes. Disc 1 overlaps 2 again (I hate that!), and Disc 3 gets its own little slot. Jill and the kids are on disc one; Tim, Al, and Heidi are on disc 2; Tim is all by his lonely self on disc three.

The menus are basically the same as season 3, which isn’t a bad thing. The theme music plays on the main menu with the options of play all, episode select, special features (disc one), and set up. The submenus, unlike last season’s release, also plays on the submenus.

The episodes are all presented correctly in the order of appearance. The two-parter of the season, “Tool Time After Dark,” is shown as one 43 minute episode (if you select part one)… if you select part two, you start twenty minutes into the two parter and it lasts about twenty five minutes… and no theme song… this is weird. So your best bet on that episode is to just select part one.

The video quality and audio is stunningly clear, and it does not seem as though the video is over a decade old!

Unfortunately, HI still lacks in the special features. We get a 7 minute blooper reel (which luckily is NOT the same ones you get to see in the closing credits anyway).

Some minor changes and big changes are evident in season four. The boys are older, but still not too old. Jill gets laid off in the premiere and starts back to college to pursue a degree in psychology, and we meet Tim’s brother Marty and wife Nancy (who Tim sees naked in an episode). We also meet the Hardware store gang at Harry’s Hardware. Tim and Al go to prison for scalping tickets to a football game, Tim neglects Jill during her illness on Superbowl day, and Wilson goes on his first date in twenty years.

Another thing you will notice is that Season Four also has a new graphics scheme (the opening theme song credits, as well as the closing credits), but we still have the same theme song. This will remain until Season 7 when the music and the graphics change.

This is a very memorable season and I would give this 5 stars, despite the lack of special features!!

Don’t hesitate buying this.

As this film opens, a sullen fourteen year old Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is about to be deposited with his two gruff and irascible old uncles against his will by his mother Mae (Kyra Sedgwick) while she supposedly pursues her education and a career. Hub and Garth McCann, played respectively by Robert Duvall and Michael Caine, are no more enamored of the arrangement than is Walter, but an uneasy truce occurs between them as Walter comes to understand their eccentricities and in fact serves as somewhat of an outlet for Garth’s desire to settle down somewhat in his final years. One of the elements twhich makes the film a true delight is the extreme nature of the antics of these “old men”, whether it is shooting at traveling salesmen for fun or alienating their relatives to maintain their solitude. The backdrop to the story is that Hub and Garth are rumored to be quite wealthy; and in fact Walter’s mother instructs him to attempt to locate the source and location of their supposed wealth. (Perhaps the mafia, or bank robberies, or the foreign legion?)

As Walter settles in with them and their numerous dogs (and a pig who thinks he’s a dog), the “plot suddenly thickens” as Hub acts strangely and Walter discovers mysterious evidence of a beautiful young woman somewhere in their history. Garth tells Walter a fantastic tale of foreign adventure and intrigue involving Hub and the enchanting princess Jasmine, and the story is actually incorporated into the movie in the form of the adventure epics of fifty years ago with Emanuelle Vaugier playing the role of Hub’s lost love. Meanwhile, some “used” circus animals arrive, including a tired and sick old lion who Walter nurses back to health as he enjoys the “jungle” habitat provided by the corn field that has emerged from their failed attempt to grow a vegetable garden. The movie reaches a wonderful climax as the forces of good confront the forces of evil (true comic book style) and Walter is forced to confront the fact that life is full of surprises, not all of which include happy endings, and that we have to be strong enough to accept unpleasant truths and move on.

But, of course, any description of the plot doesn’t convey the appeal of this film; the storyline is simply the backdrop for the life which is infused into this movie by the superb performances of the stars, the excellent directing, and the way in which the story unfolds. It is fun yet touching, with enough elements of the unexpected interspersed with truly laugh out loud humorous incidents to make the almost two hours fly by. It’s hard to know who is more appealing, those old second hand lions Robert Duvall and Michael Caine (who put their superb talents to use in a film they have stated that they really enjoyed making) or Jasmine, the circus lion who late in life was destined for her moment of glory. And the story has a marvelous symmetry, both in the juxtaposition of the opening and closing scenes and in the brief appearance of Josh Lucas as the adult Walter. Finally, the climatic moment is followed by a gradual conclusion to the story which incorporates a truly wonderful finale.

In some aspects this is a far from perfect film; in some respects it would be easy to write a critical review detailing the fact that the plot was pure fantasy and that no attempt was made to seriously address many of the issues which the movie raises. But such criticisms would not be consistent with the mood which the movie evoked for me and the remainder of the audience. This movie is about life, about its surprises and its enjoyment, and as corny as it is it is also great fun. I enjoyed it so much that I have chosen to ignore one of my personal reviewing rules; I decided to round up my rating to five stars in spite of the fact that I haven’t decided if it is good enough so that I will want to own the DVD. I know that I’ll enjoy watching it several more times and decided that was good enough. So, go see this lighthearted film when you want to smile and laugh and feel good about life and it will confirm that whether you’re old or a teenager it’s still possible to learn and grow and have a good time.

It occurs to me as I sit here pondering my review of “Secondhand Lions” that I must somehow cloak the first words that come to mind. Words, phrases, such as “a feel-good movie” or “good family fun” or “heart-warming.” As if it were, well, “uncool” to label a movie such things these days, almost like a movie kiss of death. Isn’t this a time of Hollywood special effects? Of hot babes and pyrotechnics? Of gratuitous violence and sensationalism? So it is. And so this movie is not. And oh, we are a glad audience for it!

Haley Joel Osment, to whom many of us in the movie audience were introduced in “Sixth Sense,” plays Walter, a young boy whose mother (Kyra Sedgewick) pursues everything in life but motherhood. He finds himself dumped like excess baggage on the well weathered front stoop of his two uncles’ country house. The uncles, played with wonderful eccentricity by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall, resist but later embrace their young nephew. How the three bond into a true family is a tale that does indeed warm the heart, lighten the spirit, and perhaps even restore a faded belief in today’s cynical world that goodness, yes, goodness, still has a place on the silver screen. Osment is absolutely first rate in this movie, and the two vintage stars, Caine and Duvall, still shine as brightly as ever, if not more so.

It may be that the popularity of movies such as this could send Hollywood a message. Good is still good on the movie screen.

This volume concludes the series’ biggest cliffhanger from Vol. 7…somewhat. Onizuka is presented with a way out of the last volume’s problem, but takes a different path, leading Aizawa Miyabi having to top her most devious plan ever, with one that is her most dangerous.

To quickly review what this series is about: Eikichi Onizuka, a former bike gang member, college karate champ, 22 years old and a bachelor, has taken it upon himself to be the world’s greatest teacher. With little or no qualifications, he somehow gets accepted into a prestigious school, is assigned the worst class of delinquents and somehow has to control them.

Onizuka has to deal with various opponent-students during the course of the series: bully Aizawa Miyabi, super smart Kikuchi, fatal genius Urumi Kanzaki, and fierce Kunio Murai.

This volume plays like three different stories: first, the conclusion to Miyabi’s plans from Vol. 7; second, Japanese idol Toroko’s company drawing the ire of local Yakuza, who latch on to Onizuka and crooked cop Saejima’s loot of gold bars; and finally, a revisitation of Kunio Murai’s “Mother Complex,” this time with the idea of marriage thrown around.

This is the darkest volume yet, drawing more than just the students into the scheme. The tension rises between former buddies Miyabi and Kanzaki; the latter decides to strike back on Onizuka’s behalf with a plan that sends shivers down the spine for its cold-bloodedness. It’s still the same level and mix of comedy and action as the previous GTOs, but with raised stakes.

Again, watching this series in Japanese is *necessary*, not only for the word jokes but because the story has pretty significant differences from the English to the Japanese versionin terms of what’s going on. The Japanese vocal cast is far superior, and the vocal intonations better match the facial expressions; the storyline and what they say are far more risque and naughtier than the English dub as well.

If you’ve been collecting the series up to this point, I don’t need to tell you to buy it. If you haven’t, you’re best off having watched the previous volumes, and may struggle as to who’s bad, good, and why if this is your first GTO.

If you ever want to watch an anime with a great story line. Characters that can almost be real, this is the one! The storyline and the transition, humor and all other plots that come into this show are excellently done. I highly recommend that this show should be seen. But, to me you won’t get a real flair for the character’s personalities in this one unless you turn off the english dubbed voices. Just put the subtitles on, trust me its much better. The Japanese Onizuka sounds sooo much funnier. Highly recommended!!! It’s a keeper. (Refering to the entire series)
